McCoy Pottery

A practical first guide to a widely collected American name—and to the family, company, and mark changes that make “McCoy” more complicated than it first appears.

The name

Several histories sit behind one familiar word.

McCoy collecting involves related but distinct Ohio businesses, including the Nelson McCoy Sanitary Stoneware Company and later Nelson McCoy Pottery. Production ranged from utilitarian stoneware to planters, vases, kitchenware, cookie jars, and novelty forms.

Because the name is famous, reproductions and misleading attributions are common. Some genuine McCoy production is unmarked; some pieces carrying a McCoy-style mark are not period originals.

Collector caution
  • “McCoy” should not be used as a catch-all for every unmarked American planter or cookie jar.
  • Prices vary sharply by rarity, color, size, condition, and whether the form is documented.
  • Future updates will add a mark timeline and confirmed catalog forms.
